The Unitizer

Happy March to All of Our Unit 498 Members!

As we embrace the arrival of spring, it’s the perfect time to sharpen our skills at the bridge table and engage with fellow bridge lovers.  This month, we have our regular unit game, Swiss game and awards night, mentor/mentee online game as well as an exciting event for our new and advancing players.  Whether you are a seasoned player or just starting out, there’s something for everyone.  Join us as we celebrate our community and the joy of bridge!

Unit 498 Winter Sectional

Wow!  We had an amazing turnout at our Winter Sectional at the Palo Alto Bridge Club on February 21st/22nd.  We cannot extend enough appreciation to Carol Lashman and her team for the amazing success of our sectional.  Thanks to the many helpers who chipped in:  Bob Gleason, Eileen DiGiorgio, Kathryn Barnard, Jeanne Urich, Lauren Rosen, Kit Morse and Marc Cervellino.  Please extend an extra thank-you to any of these people when you see them for the effort they put in to make this a fabulous tournament!

A special shout-out to our Art Weinstein trophy winners in our 99er game this year:  Sharon Schroeder and Kris Domitrovich, finishing with an awesome 70.24% game!

Lesson and Bridge Game with Phil Abrahamson

On Saturday March 7, we have an exciting event planned for our newcomer and intermediate players with fewer than 199 master points.  Teacher of the Year and Planet Bridge Coach Phil Abrahamson will be giving a 30-minute lesson followed by an 18-board game with a post-game hand review.  All this starts at 9:30am aiming to be finished around 12:30pm for an entry fee of $15.  No partner needed!  Snacks provided!  Find more information on our website.  We hope to see you there! February 14 Unit Game

What better way to celebrate Valentine’s Day than play in our unit game!  We had a very nice turnout with 14 tables, 8 in the 499er game and 6 in the open game.  A fabulous directing job by Jenny, as usual, and expertly organized by Leslie Braker including a wonderful lunch with help from many of our unit members.  Thank you for making this such a successful day!

Congratulations to our first place winners in the open game:  Bob Gleason-Gail Cameron N/S and Janice O’Brien-Fred Chasalow E/W.  Coming in second:  Art Quey-Kai Eckert N/S and Arline Van Ness-Jim Van Ness E/W.  In the 499er game, first went to Barbara Lewis-Lauren Rosen N/S and Lennie Gotcher-Libby O’Leary E/W.  Second place finishers were Elena Powers-Janice Carter N/S and Michael Lieberman-Helen Kishi E/W.  Congratulations!

Our next Unit Game is on March 14.  Pre-Register Here

Swiss Teams and Awards Recognition

We had another fun evening of Swiss teams play in February with Jenny directing.  Congratulations to the first-place team of Angela Young, Bruce Deberry, Sue Papilion and Vince Tornabene followed by the second-place team of Doug Seifert, Chuck Simmons, Emily Francis and Henry Zhang.

Our next Swiss teams game is Wednesday, March 18.  In addition to our Swiss game we will recognize our 2025 Mini McKenney and Helen Shanbrom Ace of Clubs unit winners.  There will be cake and a (non-alcoholic) toast for everyone!  Please come early with your partner to allow time to set up teams so we can start our game at 6:30.  Teams and matchups will be decided that night - No pre-registration required.  Please join us on the 18th!

Mentor-Mentee Games

Our second mentor/mentee game of the year was played online on BBO.  Thank you, Eileen DiGiorgio, for all the work to organize the game and to Art for directing.  Congratulations to Ken Hoeck-Jim Van Ness N/S and Birgit Shay-Mark Sorenson E/W for their first-place finish and Victoria Knaack-Carrie Snyder N/S and Vince Tornabene-Kit Morse E/W for finishing in second place.

Our next mentor/mentee game will be online on March 26 at 6:30 on BBO.  Please email Eileen DiGiorgio at Eileenunit498@gmail.com if you are interested in playing.  This game is a great way for our newer players to meet and play with a more experienced player.  All newer players are encouraged to play!

More information about our Mentor/Mentee Program can be found on our Unit 498 Website.

Ever thought of Playing in the GNT?

The ACBL Grand National Teams (GNT) is a team knockout competition held annually where teams from each district compete to represent their district in the Summer North American Bridge Championship (NABC) in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

The Flight B representative (limit of 3000 MPs) is still to be decided with the qualifying tournament being played at the Palo Alto Bridge Center on March 21st/22nd.   Registration is required and must be completed online at least 7 days before the event begins.  The links to the registration pages are on the GNT page of the District 21 website (Grand Nationals Teams – ACBL District 21).

Spring Non-Life Master Tournament April 18

For all of our players with 750 master points or fewer and not yet life masters, mark Saturday April 18th on your calendar and make plans to play in our Non-Life Master tournament at The Villa.  Since space is limited, pre-registration is required.  To find out more information and to register, click here.  ACBL Unit 498 Bridge in San Mateo - Tournaments

Bi-Weekly Supervised Play with Mary Bates

Unit 498 will host Supervised Play with Mary Bates at the Villa on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of most months from 1:30 to 3:30. Upcoming March dates are the 11th and 25th.

Come and practice your bridge playing in a relaxed, social setting. Certified instructor Mary Bates and other experienced players will be on hand to answer any questions that may arise during the bidding and play of the hand.

All levels are welcome, but this program is especially geared towards newer players and partnerships who want to practice, as well as those who do not yet feel ready for a duplicate game.

No partner required!  Cost is $5. Register by emailing Mary Bates at marymanleybates@hotmail.com

Name Badges

If you would like a nametag to wear during play instead of a handwritten name, Jenny will be ordering name badges in early March.   The deadline to order is March 10.  Use this link to order:
