The Unitizer

Happy April to All of Our Unit 498 Members!

April brings fresh energy to our club — perfect for polishing your play and reconnecting with fellow bridge enthusiasts. This month’s lineup includes our unit game, Swiss teams game, a mentor/mentee in-person game, and a non-life master sectional at The Villa on April 18th – something for everyone, from beginners to veterans. Come celebrate spring, community, and the shared joy of bridge!

March 14 Unit Game

On Saturday, March 14 we had a very nice turnout with seven tables in the 499er game and six in the open game.  A fabulous directing job by Jenny, as usual, and a wonderful lunch organized by Leslie Braker with help from many of our unit members.  Thank you for making this such a successful day!

In the 499er game, first went to Helen Kishi-Philip Tsui N/S and Carol Lashman-Eileen DiGiorgio E/W.  Second place finishers were Allan Abrams-Donna Jang N/S and Stanley Cai-Josh Jia E/W.  First place winners in the open game were Art Quey-Roger Dewes N/S and Phil Kuhn-Dan Raider E/W.  Coming in second:  Kathryn Barnard-Lucy Ballard N/S and Genie and Jeff Reynolds E/W.

Congratulations to all!

Our next Unit Game is on Saturday, April 11.  Please register here

Swiss Teams and Awards Recognition

We celebrated Unit 498’s 2025 winners of the Mini McKenney, Helen Shanbrom Ace of Clubs, and Virtual Ace of Clubs awards at our Swiss teams game on March 18th.  We had a very close Swiss game with the team of Doug Seifert, Chuck Simmons, Carl Ebeling and Debra Martinez squeezing out a win over Joseph Hoagland, Michael Hoagland, Aster Wu and Mary Bates.  Fun for all who joined and congratulations to our 2025 club winners!

Our next Swiss Teams game is on Wednesday, April 15th.  Please come early with your partner to allow time to set up teams so we can get our game started at 6:30.  Teams and matchups will be decided that night - No pre-registration required.

Spring Non-Life Master Tournament April 18

For all of our players with 750 master points or fewer, mark Saturday April 18th on your calendar and make plans to play in our non-life master tournament at The Villa.  Since space is limited, pre-registration is required.  To find out more information and to register, see  ACBL Unit 498 Bridge in San Mateo - Tournaments

Do What You Love to End ALZ

There’s a new name for what used to be called our Longest Day fundraising efforts.  The ACBL is an inaugural partner in the “Do What You Love to End ALZ” campaign.

While the name has changed, our commitment remains the same — to raise funds and awareness for the care, support, and research efforts of the Alzheimer’s Association®. Your fundraising and donations will play an important role in improving the lives of people living with Alzheimer's, their families, and caregivers.

Please plan on joining us for our Longest Day Bridge Game on Saturday June 20th and look for a letter soon outlining our other fundraising activities throughout the next few months.

Please visit our team webpage.  From there, you can donate directly to our Unit 498 team, or start your own sub-team in order to reach your friends and family outside our bridge universe.

You will find options for donating via credit card, Paypal, Venmo, or Google Pay.  Thank you for your support!

Mentor-Mentee Games

Six of the twelve teams in our March online Mentor-Mentee game earned masterpoints on Thursday, March 26.  Congratulations to Barbara Luttrell and Danny Xu; Danna Sorenson and Carmen Keenan; Mark Sorenson and Birgit Shay; Eileen DiGiorgio and Barbara Lewis; Kathryn Barnard and Dean Zhou; and Vince Tornabene and Cliff Chernick.

We will kick off the next set of Mentor-Mentee games with another in-person game on Wednesday, April 22nd, 5:45 pm meet with your partner and 6:30 game time at the Villa.  Please email Eileen DiGiorgio at Eileenunit498@gmail.com if you are interested in playing.  This game is a great way for our newer players to meet and play with a more experienced player.  All newer players are encouraged to play!

More information about our Mentor/Mentee Program can be found on our Unit 498 Website.

Lesson and Bridge Game with Phil Abrahamson

We welcomed ABTA Teacher of the Year and Planet Bridge Coach Phil Abrahamson for an inspiring lesson and game on Saturday March 7th.

Thanks to Jeanne Urich, Rita Armstrong, and Eileen DiGiorgio for inviting Phil and players from throughout the area to what we hope will become a somewhat regular chance for newer players to learn new tricks and play in a limited game. Forty players participated, with Vince Tornabene and Chuck Simmons finishing first N/S and Veena Damle and John Selin leading the E/W field.  Thanks also to Jenny for directing.

We look forward to our next newcomer/intermediate lesson and game in June.  More information to come soon!

Bi-Weekly Supervised Play with Mary Bates

Unit 498 hosts Supervised Play with Mary Bates at the Villa on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of most months from 1:30 to 3:30. Upcoming April dates are the 8th and 22nd.

Come and practice your bridge playing in a relaxed, social setting. Certified instructor Mary Bates and other experienced players will be on hand to answer any questions that may arise during the bidding and play of the hand.

All levels are welcome, but this program is especially geared towards newer players and partnerships who want to practice, as well as those who do not yet feel ready for a duplicate game.

No partner required!  Cost is $5. Register by emailing Mary Bates at marymanleybates@hotmail.com

199er Game Every Wednesday Morning at The Villa!

Since mid-March, Jenny’s Wednesday morning lesson and in-person game is geared towards players with fewer than 199 masterpoints.  The lesson starts at 9:45 with the game starting at 10:15.  Play will typically go until 12:45. Changing the game to a 199er game allows Jenny to award more masterpoints, and the additional time accommodates 18 boards. More time, more fun!

Please visit our Unit 498 website for news on all of these activities, as well as info on new members, rank advancements, and results and schedules for our Unit and Club Games.  https://www.unit498.com/.
