San Mateo Unit 498              June 2025

The Unitizer

Hello, Unit 498 Members!

This June, we proudly join the ACBL in raising awareness and funds for the valuable work done by the Alzheimer’s Association.

Alzheimer's disease is an escalating global public health crisis. More than seven million Americans are living with Alzheimer's disease right now. If nothing changes, that number is projected to nearly double to 13.8 million by 2060.

These are frightening facts, but there is hope, thanks to the Alzheimer’s Association’s Longest Day fundraising efforts that provide much-needed care and support and advance crucial research.  We urge you to donate to help them continue this important work.

To date, we are almost halfway to our 2025 fundraising goal of $40,000!  Please click the link below to learn more about our efforts and make your donation now.  To participate in our fundraising activities, contact Barbara Lewis at:  blewisunit498@gmail.com

Longest Day Unit Game, Saturday, June 21

Our June 21st Unit Game will be dedicated to our Longest Day fundraising efforts. Please join us for lunch, a visit from a representative from the Alzheimer’s Association, a raffle and more. Of course, we’ll play some great bridge that day too.

Lunch will be served at 11:30 with the game starting at 12:15.
The game entry fee is $20 ($15 for students under 26) with $5 going to the Longest Day.
(Lunch is included.)

The game will be directed by Jennifer Kuhn. If you need a partner, please sign up at the Partnership Desk.  Please contact Carl Ebeling if you have questions or need help finding a partner.

Please Pre-Register Here as space is limited. On-site registration will close at 12:00.

Jenny and Raad’s games on June 18th and June 20th will also benefit the Alzheimer’s Association.

Millbrae Racquet Club members supported Unit 498’s Longest Day fundraising with a BBQ, tennis, a raffle and silent auction on May 26th.  Thanks to MRC’s board and Unit 498 members Janice Carter, Rita Armstrong, Ken Hoeck, and Jim Van Ness for leading this successful event.

May Unit Game

Our May Unit game was very nicely attended.  Nine tables played in the open division.  Arline and Jim Van Ness led the N/S field, with Gail Cameron and Lauren Rosen; Sue Papilion and Janelle Van Rensselaer; and Wendy Benveniste and Debbie Weinstein also earning masterpoints.  Andrew Straus and Fred Chasalow came out on top of the E/W side, followed by David Murray and Raymond Ochoa; Phil Kuhn and Daniel Raider; Gloria Darke and Josephine Ventura; and Kit Morse and Pete Goldsmith.

The four tables in the 499er game saw some fun competition with Pamela Resser and Ron Morris coming out on top.  Allan Abrams and Donna Jang and Marie Pattie and Helen Kishi also scored.

Swiss Teams Game

Our first Summer Swiss Series game on May 21st drew 24 players to the Villa.  As we will do at the remaining games on June 25 and August 13, teams were assigned that night to balance the field and introduce players to some new playing partners.

Finishing in first place was Leslie Braker’s team of Madhu Mehta, Doug Seifert, and Chuck Simmons.  Second went to Eileen DiGiorgio’s team of Sue Galletta, Inna Brovman, and Cliff Chernick. Nancy Zorfas captained her team of Gloria Halliday, Lauren Rosen, and Barbara Lewis to third.

Plan to join the fun for either or both of our remaining Summer Swiss Series games on Wednesday, June 25 and August 13.  We do not have advance registrations for the games, but we encourage you to arrive by 6:15 for the 6:30 start time.

Mentor / Mentee Game

Thanks to Kit Morse for organizing our Mentor/Mentee games.  Our May game was held online on BBO with eight tables and many pairs earning masterpoints while learning from each other.  On the N/S side, Fred Chasalow and Janice O’Brien placed first, with Deborah Drysdale and Pamela Resser; Carl Ebeling and Julie Navid; and Pete Goldsmith and Carmen Keenan close behind.  Pairs sitting E/W saw Cliff Chernick and Vince Tournabene come out on top, followed by Jim Van Ness and Ken Hoeck; and Sue Papilion and Janice Carter.

Our next Mentor/Mentee game will be online on Thursday, June 26, 6:30 on BBO.  Please contact Kit Morse with any questions:  kitunit498@gmail.com

Have you visited the ACBL Clubhouse on BBO?

Playing in the ACBL's Clubhouse on BBO is a way to benefit our local clubs when you play online, because almost half of the entry fees are passed through.  The Clubhouse offers games for players at every masterpoint level, including free games for those under 20 masterpoints, throughout the day.  Check them out on the ACBL Clubhouse tab on BBO!

In Memoriam - Tim Rumoshosky (1948 – 2025)

by Rosemarie Dean

Tim Rumoshosky passed away in his sleep on Saturday, May 17 due to complications from an abdominal aorta aneurysm he experienced in 2023.  Some of us still remember Tim as the owner and director of the San Mateo Bridge Club which was located next to the Hilton Garden Inn on Bridgepointe Circle in San Mateo from 1980 to 1987.  Tim was a Sapphire Life Master and had in excess of 3,500 masterpoints.  He ran a fun and fantastic club with his longtime partner Sue Groff.  For many years club members enjoyed listening to Tim and Sue discuss the bidding and playing of bridge hands as they didn’t always agree.

In 1999 Tim and Sue moved to Arizona.   Tim directed games in the Scottsdale and Sun City bridge clubs until 2014.   At that time, he gave up directing in order to mentor novice bridge players.  This was until he became ill in 2023.  At that time, Sue took over the mentoring of many of Tim’s students and continues to do so.  Tim was admired by all of his students.  He will be remembered for his excellent knowledge of the game and dry sense of humor which caught you off guard and kept you laughing.

Tim had a great passion for dogs; he and Sue adopted two rescues, “Kali” and “Kaci.”  If you would like to do something in Tim’s honor, you can make a donation to the National Canine Cancer Foundation (https://wearethecure.org).   Please state your donation is for Tim Rumoshosky and an acknowledgment will be sent to Sue if you include her address:
17300 N. 88th Avenue, Apt. 118, Peoria, AZ  85382

Tim is survived by family members in Arkansas and North Carolina.
