November 2003 Column

San Mateo-Redwood City, Calif. Unit

Two Sundays to remember: November 9th and December 14th, both unit games. Socialize at 5:15; dine at 5:30; play at 6:15 PM. November 9th will feature turkey and trimmings; for December 14th, prime ribs. The November Birthday Bash hasn’t yet been scheduled. Stay tuned to the club bulletin board for details.

Per ACBL, new members are Samuel Ieong and Marcia Wadell. Pat Ostovar has transferred into our unit contrary to September’s column. Sorry for the error. Welcome all.

ACBL also reported Jeanette Rose became a Junior Master. Marcus Ballinger, Carol Clements and Arthur Fritz became Club Masters. Arlie Lamb made Club Master, Bill Rabin–Life Master, Yatindra Sahae–Silver Life Master and Ted Richmond–Gold Life Master. Congratulations on your noteworthy achievements.

There were two wonderful recoveries by long time club players. Eric Dundatscheck punctuated his recovery by arriving with a freshly baked carrot cake. Gary Schweitzer arrived with Roger Dewes and demonstrated to their competition how bridge should be played.

A wonderful barbecued Tri Tip dinner enhanced the September Unit Game. Overall winners were A: Sheldon & Carol Fein; Edie Wong & Robert Ng; Steve Smolen & Sidney Lorvan. B: Loretta Baines & Evelyn Langer; Joanne Allen & Dean Wangsvick; Leonard Brill & Robert Weaver. C: Judith Paul & Thomas Durden; Linda Schwartz & Janet Grove; Fran Ball & Vera Bass. Takemi Totes has initiated a new event, a Birthday Bash honoring those who celebrate a birthday in that month. It premiered Saturday afternoon, September 6th, with some stellar performances. A: Larry Kolton & Carol Wallace; Stan Green & Daisy Straus; David Chan & Robert Ng. B: Jerry & Ellie Stauffer; Charles Berger & Jan Mrazek; Marian Jarrett & Evelyn Langer. C: Paul Blanchard & James Gibboney; Janise Pashi & Selma Mittelman; Janet Grove & Linda Schwarz. Patty Frederick will direct the next Birthday Bash Thursday evening, October 9th, too late for coverage in this issue. Happy birthday all and congratulations to the BB and Unit winners.

Many 498ers played in the Santa Clara Regional and the Sacramento and Santa Clara Sectionals. For the three events, Ted Richmond’s 35.84 MPs edged out Hamish Bennett by less than two points. Others of the top 12 were Gigi Marki, Greg House, Steve Kanzee, Cheryl Haines, Yatindra Sahae, Dipak Patel, Randy Sahae, Arthur Ferman, Robert Steiger and Robert Ipswitch. Hamish Bennett achieved two first places. Finishing with one first place were Ted Richmond, Gigi Marki, Steve Kanzee, Cheryl Haines, Dipak Patel, Antoni Baranski, Bob Ercolini and Paul Levine. Way to go, team.
