September 2003 Column
San Mateo-Redwood City, Calif. Unit
Dates to remember: September 14th and October 12th. Sunday, September 14th is our monthly unit game. The menu will feature barbecued Tri Tip. Sunday, October 12th is October’s unit game. At both events, socialize at 5:15; dine at 5:30; play at 6:15 PM.
Welcome to Unit 498. New are Lois Jamart, Ms. Kiran Nadar, Nancy Raymund and Myrna Robinson. Returning are Glenn Cody and Beatrice Trinkner. Transfers in are Steve Smolen and Mary Wailes. These new members are a force. Many did well at the Sectionals and Nationals as reported below. Moving and transferring out were Betty Cronin and Patricia Ostovar to San Francisco #506; Hanan Deeby and former Unit President Bernard Figueiredo to Oceanside #531. Good luck in your new venues. Drop in and play at Bayshore when you’re in the area.
ACBL reported members’ progress. Ruth Schrag made Junior Master, Kathleen Martin and Mary Meneses–Regional Masters, David Silber–NABC Master, Pauline Berkow–Bronze Life Master and Harry Bonn–Silver Life Master. Well done!
Unfortunately, there was one permanent transfer out this month. Melba Riley played for many years in Margaret Hale’s Woodlake game. She moved with the game to Bayshore where we enjoyed her cheerfulness and optimism until her passing. Our condolences to her son, Gordon, and the friends she left behind.
Seventy-two players in two nine-table sections celebrated Carla Van Zuiden’s birthday at her game on July 31st. As usual, Daisy Straus took charge of organizing the food and did a major portion of the cleanup. Daisy’s last organization of a gala was an outstanding event honoring our unit board. Thanks, Daisy for all you’ve done.
Many past and present members competed in the Palo Alto and San Mateo Sectionals and the Long Beach Nationals. Far outstripping the others were Rich Pavlicek, Jr., winner of the Mini-Spingolds, (161+ MPs) and Ed Barlow (156+). They each had firsts in two events. Winners of 36+ to 60+ MPs were Pat Galligan, Hamish Bennett, new member Ms. Kiran Nadar, Greg McLaughlin, Jennifer and Philip Kuhn, Gilbert Ramirez, Rajeev Gupta, Frank Jackson and Nancy Zakim. What hauls! Many of us would take years to earn 40 MPs. Everett Boyer, my source for much of the above material, did well at the Nationals with 25+ MPs including an event first and won a Strat Pairs game at the San Diego Sectional.
Mie Thiemmedh scored less than those above but had two firsts. New member Steve Smolen garnered 9+ MPs, mostly at our sectional. Lois Jamart earned 7+ at Palo Alto’s. Dorothy Campbell reported the enthusiastic reaction and trophy displays when two fledgling players, Margot Cookson and Nancy Raymund, captured firsts in 0-20 and 0–50 classes earning 3+ MPs in the Nationals.
Eric Dundatscheck, our Sunshine Chair, has courageously chronicled his diagnosis with carcinoma, angina pains and high blood pressure. He told of his experience with radiation, chemotherapy, CT and Thallium scans and more. Advise Eric or me if you’d like a copy.
