July 2003 Column
San Mateo-Redwood City, Calif. Unit
Remember July 11th, 12th and 13th and August 10th. July 11th , 12th and 13th—our July Summer Sectional is again at the San Mateo County Expo Center. Fran Ball promises to top last March’s tournament. One added attraction is a 3–session Bracketed Knockout Match. The first session starts Friday, July 11th at 7:15 PM at our Bayside Bridge Club. The final two sessions of the Knockouts will be held at the Expo Center on Saturday, July 12th at 12:30 PM and 6:00 PM. The complete program is in a display ad elsewhere in this edition of the "Forum." Call Fran at (650) 591-2790 to reserve for Friday night.
Sunday, August 10th is our Unit Game. Socialize at 5:15 PM. Dine at 5:30. Play at 6:15.
Welcome to transfers to Unit 498: Carl Brunsting, Ruth Schrag and Takemi Totes. Have fun and continue to learn. ACBL reported three new Club Masters: Jack Grant, Charles Neubauer and Madeleine Tang.
At our May 4th Annual Meeting, Unit Game overall winners were A: Maye Soules & David Hoffman; Donald & Elise Stone; Jay & Mary Bates. B: Loretta Baines & Sara Rae Miller; Gretchen Schmeeckle & Erika Stein; Brian & Tom Reis. C: Vandana Vidwans & Rajeev Gupta; Albert Malouf & Leonor Frankel; Dennis Teske & Gerda Koppel.
Our new board met on May 7th to elect officers. Chosen were Ellie Stauffer, President; Bill Rabin, Vice President; Marian Jarrett, Secretary and Al Malouf, Treasurer.
Hail to William Watson. He finished 29th in the gigantic Western Conference Spring STAC rankings. This was the second largest sectional tournament in the country with over 7000 tables in more than 270 clubs. Will had a 70% and a 68% game on consecutive evenings with different partners. Congratulations, Will.
We welcome back Bruce Bishop from heart bypass surgery. His experience has affected neither his bridge play nor his droll sense of humor. Give him a decent partner and he’ll do very well.
Hansi Torczyner, the squeeze queen, is recovering from surgery. We hope to welcome Hansi back to the bridge tables soon. Meanwhile, she’d be delighted to have visitors.
Sal Ignoffo and Dan Raider are forming a committee to monitor dress code at the club. Their interest was aroused by a pair of green, navy and yellow plaid slacks worn by their dapper "Forum" correspondent. If the nascent committee succeeds in burning the "offending" trousers, Sal and Dan will have a foot up on winning the Savonarola award at next year’s annual meeting.
If you’re running late, need a partner or want to reserve a table call the club at (650) 344–4919. For other club information, see Andrew Binstock’s web site (www.meckwell.com/unit498). E–mail, fax or drop off material for this column in the club suggestion box. Please include your name and phone number in case I have any questions.
