Remember July 12th–13th and August 10th. (No June or July Unit Game) July 12th and 13th—our July Summer Sectional—again at the San Mateo County Expo Center. Fran Ball promises to top last March’s tournament. Sunday, August 10th—our Unit Game. Socialize at 5:15 PM. Dine at 5:30. Play at 6:15.
At our annual meeting and May Unit Game, president Ellie Stauffer announced board election results and award winners. Re-elected are: Eric Dundatscheck, Paul Levine and Brian Reis; newly elected are Derlyn Gagnier and Bill Rabin, all for two years. Fran Ball, Marian Jarrett, Al Malouf, Sara Rae Miller, Linda Schwarz and Ellie Stauffer will serve for one more year. Ellie extended heartfelt thanks to retiring directors Ralph Levin and Kate Talbot for jobs well done.
Next, Marian Jarrett received the Joseph Schmitz Award for the player best exemplifying goodwill at the bridge table. Additionally, Marian shared a major non-bridge honor. She and Wanda Ross were Volunteers of the Year for Samaritan House. Al Malouf and Daisy Straus were co-winners of the Diamond Award for services rendered to Unit members and the Club. Ace of Clubs Awards for most master points made in 2002 club games went to: Rookie, Arlie Lamb; Junior Master, Dan Raider; Club Master, Linda Schwarz; Sectional Master, Paul Levine; Regional Master, Jane Lane; NABC Master, Bob Rose; Life Master, John Lawton; Bronze Life Master, Roger Dewes; Silver Life Master, Daisy Straus; Gold Life Master, Dee Sauer; Diamond Life Master, Frank Jackson; and Grand Life Master, Hamish Bennett.
2002 Mini-McKenney Awards, for points earned on the tournament trail, went to: Rookie, Arlie Lamb; Junior Master, Dan Raider; Club Master, Dan Stowell; Sectional Master, Paul Levine; Regional Master, Ralph Levin; NABC Master, Rajeev Gupta; Life Master, Leila Gaines; Bronze Life Master, Yatindra Sahae; Silver Life Master, Xiaodong Zhang; Gold Life Master, Rich Pavlicek, Jr.; Diamond Life Master, Frank Jackson; and Grand Life Master, Hamish Bennett.
Ellie congratulated our new Life Masters. Rajeev Gupta, Joanne McConnell, Randy Sahae and Kris Tejwani made it in 2002. Carol Gerlach, Sara Rae Miller, Carol Ringoen and Kate Talbot in 2003. She also commended Takemi Totes for initiating a pot luck celebration of new Life Masters on April 19th. 17½tables joined in paying tribute and endorse continuing the event in future years.
Welcome to Unit 498. New members are Linda Brown, Maureen Chenette, Ching-Hua Cho, George Leishman, and Tomas Lund. Transfers in are Donald Rome, Albert Stein and William Watson. Here’s to fun and progress. We predict a great future for another newcomer. First time player Bob Johnson teamed with Bob Jones to top the May 2nd 299er game. ACBL reported new Junior Masters: Marcus Ballinger, Patricia Hughes and Elizabeth McKenna. Regional Masters: Don Doolittle, Miwako Litwin, Dan Raider, Dan Stowell and Becky Willrich. NABC Master: Paul Levine. Kate Talbot was a double winner. She became both Life Master and Bronze Life Master. Congratulations all.
