January 2003 Column

San Mateo-Redwood City, Calif. Unit

Happy 2003 to all. Don’t worry about marking January, 2003 checks with a 2002 date. It’s no worse than flubbing your partner’s call in a new convention.

There won’t be a unit game in January or March. January’s will be superceded by our New Year’s Eve gala, where many members will shortly be celebrating; March’s by our sectional on March 15th and 16th, another exquisitely organized Fran Ball event.

Our Unit Game of Sunday, February 9th will once again feature stratified pairs. We’ll socialize at 5:15, dine at 5:30 pm, and play at 6:15 pm. Welcome to our newest member, Rickie Rossiter. We wish Rickie enjoyment and success at the bridge tables.

At November’s Unit game, the winners were: A Overall: Robert Rose & Robert Ng, Betty & Victor Szteinbaum and Beryl Geller & Bob Jones. B Overall: Mie Thiemmedh & Celia Chu, Claude Hughes & Paul Levine and Daniel Raider & David Silber. C Overall: Roy Nordman & Carol Gonella, Morrie Nelson & Margot Goodman and George & Sasha Orenberg.

The November Club Championship results are in. Robert Rose had an exceptional week, earning 8.51 MPs with one 1st place finish. Runners up were Mildred Engelman with 6.13 and Karin Rabin with 5.66 and two firsts. All the rest of the top ten earned more than four MPs. Their 1st place finishes in their class are bracketed after their names: Gigi Marki (1), Bill Rabin (2), Fred Schiro (1), Robert Ng (1), Sal Ignoffo (1), Victor Szteinbaum and Lex Murdoch (2). Other two time winners of 1st in class were: James and Rosemary Dean, Jane Lane and John Lawton.

Usually, I report our members triumphs on the tournament trail. But, I won’t have time for the web research needed to gather and analyze the November results now. I’m on my way to the Phoenix Fall NABC with Arlie Lamb. There, I’ll be on the lookout for Unit 498 success stories. Who knows? Arlie and I may do well enough to rate coverage.

We will also announce in the Forum’s next issue the November and early December tournament trail results and the many silver points awarded December 17th thru December 23rd in the Western Conference Holiday STAC at the club. If you don’t win points, remember there’s always Marian Jarrett’s 25 cent Gin game.
