November 2002 Column

San Mateo-Redwood City, Calif. Unit

Our next Unit Game dates are November 10th and December 8th. As usual, there will be socializing at 5:15 and dinner at 5:30. There will be stratified pairs at 6:15 pm on November 10th but our board will consider another type of game for December 8th.

A hearty welcome to our new members: Rob Dye, Sam Gill, Carl Lindfors, Marcie Pais, William Stern and Barry Thompson. If you’re stuck for a partner, call the club at (650)344-4419 one half hour or so before game time. Roger Herz, who is there daily except Wednesdays, will try to find you an appropriate partner. Many of his matches have become regular partners.

The ACBL has notified us of members who have upgraded their status. Congratulations to new Junior Masters: Keiko Enomoto and Joanne Neubauer; Club Master: Marnie Van Popelen; Sectional Masters: Anita Hilmoe and Dan Stowell; Regional Masters: Thomas Durden, Don Ehrman and Judith Paul; and Bronze Life Masters: Charles Berger and David Chan.

At September’s Unit game, the winners were: A Overall: Bob Rose & Robert Ng, Maye Soules & David Hoffman, Frank Jackson & Shirley Frisby and Hansi Torczyner & Patty Frederick. B Overall: Arline & James Van Ness, Edie Wong & Carl Lindfors, Janice Nakoa & Tom Quinlan and Ellie & Jerry Stauffer. C Overall: Vera Bass & Jane Lane, Jay & Mary Bates, and Gerda Koppel & Derlyn Gagnier.

Our members and frequent visitors have been busy on the tournament trail. Ted Richmond’s performance was outstanding. He was first in two events at the All-West and garnered 49.35 MPs, far outstripping our other competitors. Other big winners at the Santa Clara All West Regional, the Marin Sectional, the Santa Clara Valley Sectional and Gold Country Sectional were Ed Barlow, Sheila Balson, Cheryl Haines, William Watson, Paul Cornelius, Betsey Schneider, Jody & Richard Williams and Greg House. Other players with two first-place performances were Carol Gerlach, Gary Porter, and Dan Stowell. 800 of the 910 points were earned at the All-Western Regional but the three sectionals also produced some notable results.

At Marin, Brian & Tom Reis garnered 9.13 MPs and finished first in a 56 pair event. In the Santa Clara Valley Sectional, Steve Kanzee struck for 15 MPs by finishing first in his unlimited 56-pair event. Franklin Gonzalez hit the valley for 8.62 MPs, mostly for his first-place finish in a 54-pair event. In Gold Country, Sara Rae Miller and Jerry Stauffer were 1st in C in a 68-pair event for 3.91 MPs while Joan Baker finished 1st of 16 in the Thursday evening Charity Pairs for 3 MPs. In the four tournaments, 34 of our players took first place 38 times. The complete tournament results are posted on the Unit bulletin board.
