October 2002 Column

San Mateo-Redwood City, Calif. Unit

Our next Unit Games are on October 13th and November 10th. We socialize at 5:15 and dine at 5:30. Stratified pairs begin at 6:15 PM. Welcome to new members: Renee Ballinger, Nadine Brubaker, Richard Follenweider, Patricia Moran, Marcie Pais, Elizabeth Reaugh, Myrl Reaugh, Arnold Rudominer and David Silber. David was CEO of the ACBL. Please advise of spelling errors, etc. May our newcomers advance and enjoy. Congratulations to new Junior Masters: Natalie Kern and Charles Neubauer; Club Masters: Maneck Hiranandani and Arlie Lamb; Sectional Master: Naren Gupta. Regional Master: Paul Levine (No longer a sectional/sexual master.); NABC Master: Christine Hevener. Bronze Life Master: John Lawton; Silver Life Master: Fred Chasalow; Gold Life Master: Carla Van Zuiden.

August’s Unit game winners: A Overall: Greg House & Sarita Mathiasen, Robert Rose & Robert Ng, Donald & Elise Stone. B: George & Sasha Orenburg, Claude Hughes & Paul Levine, Dean Wangsvick & Joanne Allen. C: Arlie Lamb & Louly Geer, Carol Gerlach & Charles Wu.

August brought Ted Richmond another monthly Club Championship. His 5.66 MP for the week of August 5th edged Sal Ignoffo’s total of 5.01. Also in the top ten were Jane Lane, Norman Kalman, Joan Baker, Beryl Geller, Dariush Youssefi, Jerry Edelstein, Antoni Baranski and George Prozan. The complete summary will be posted on the club bulletin board.

Andy Binstock advised me of two feats by unit members. Rajeev Gupta and Paul Cornelius were important members of the #1 National Championship Flight C team at the July Washington, DC NABC Tournament. Of 6,016 contestants who won MPs in the tourney, they and Hamish Bennett, Joanne and Robert Wegsten and Christine Hevener were in the top 25%. Of 1,053 players who scored in Intermediate/Novice events, Christine Hevener finished 8th, Mary Armacost 14th, and Joanne Wegsten 29th.

In the June Las Vegas Regional, Frank Jackson and Antoni Baranski finished 2nd of 9 Flight 1 KO teams. They tied for 8th of 116 teams in the pairs contest. With Cole Powell of Oakland, Frank finished 2nd of 62 in the Sunday Fast Pairs.

Many of our members played in the Santa Clara All-Western Regional which ran through Labor Day. Unfortunately the results are not in yet. We’ll publish news of our members’ exploits in the Forum’s next issue. All but two of our afternoon games begin at 12:30. Margaret Hale and Patty Frederick’s Wednesday game starts at noon. If you’d like to leave by 3:30, try their game. You’ll also enjoy the lunch they provide. Sunday games begin at 1:00. In addition, on Monday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings, games begin at 7:15.

If you’re running late, need a partner or want to reserve a table call the club at (650) 344-4919. For other club information, see Andrew Binstock’s web site (www.meckwell.com/unit498).
