Congratulations to new Club Masters: Audrey Brown, Jeannette McNeil and Jean Thornley; Sectional Master: Edyth Figueiredo; Regional Masters: Carol Freeman and Anne Javer.
At June’s Unit game, the winners were: A Overall: Gigi Marki & Robert Ng, Gary Schweitzer & Gert Philippi, Peter & Kathy Golitzen, Carla Van Zuiden & Daisy Straus, Thomas Quinlan & Janice Nakao. B Overall: Bernard Figueiredo & Hanan Deeby, Beryl Geller & Ralph Levin, Jerry Stauffer & Phil Karp, Ronald Kauffman & Pauline Berkow. C Overall: George & Sasha Orenburg, Joan Shaffer & John Green, Al Malouf & Leonor Frankel, Gisela & Herb Block.
One hundred tables participated and over 198 master points were awarded in our week long June Club Championship. Ted Richmond’s 7.12 MPs topped Barbara Johnson’s 6.10 for 1st place. Additional winners of 3 or more MPs were Andrew Kridl, Roger Herz, Daisy Straus, Fred Schiro, Daniel Raider, Geoff Bromfield, Joan Baker, Gert Philippi, Ira Coltan, Frank Jackson, Arlie Lamb and Sal Ignoffo. Particularly impressive were the performances by Raider, Bromfield, and Lamb. Each has well under 200 MPs. Takemi Totes will direct our newest game—Friday’s at 7:15 PM. Additionally, she’ll be a stringer for this column. She reported two monster games: Robert Ng & Robert Rose, Sat Aft, 7/20, 74.07%; James & Rosemary Dean, Fri Eve, 8/02, 74.00%.
Some of our members and frequent visitors had monster games at recent local tournaments. At the Sacramento Regional, Carol Gerlach came in tied for 1st of 189 players with a 78% game Saturday afternoon. In Senior games, Ted Richmond’s pair was 1st of 124 Thursday and Frank Jackson’s was 1st of 84 Tuesday. In evening side pairs, Gilbert Ramirez’ was 1st of 28 Thursday and John Green & Joan Shaffer tied for 1st of 8 on Tuesday. Xiaodong Zhang’s team was 1st of 21 Flight A Swiss Teams. Hamish Bennett’s 30.41 MPs edged out Ted Richmond’s 29.79 and Xiaodong Zhang’s 25.84. Other contenders were Steven Kirshenbaum and Gilbert Ramirez. At the Palo Alto Firecracker Sectional, Ralph Levin’s pair was 1st of 90 in the 500/1500 game. Our top MP winners there was Ed Barlow with 25.76 followed by Xiaodong Zhang, Ted Richmond, Rajeev Gupta, and Ralph Levin. At San Mateo’s Summer Sectional, Andrew Straus’ pair was 1st of 117 on Saturday afternoon. His 12.3 MPs topped our list followed by David & Robert Ng, Rajeev Gupta, Xiaodong Zhang, Arlie Lamb and Douglass Ulrich. Kudos to Fran Ball and the helpers she sweet talked into setting up, taking down and running our very successful summer sectional. Without our volunteers, we’d have nothing.
I’ll post a complete summary of Club Championship and tournament results on the club bulletin board.
