April 2002 Column
San Mateo-Redwood City, Calif. Unit
San Mateo/Redwood City, April,2002 Do yourself a favor. Save three Sundays for 498's Unit games, April 14th, May 5th and June 9th. Hors d’oeuvres and conversation at 5:15, Dinner at 5:30 and stratified pairs at 6:15 PM.
February’s Unit game was a blast. After appetizers and a sumptuous Chinese dinner, we arrived at the main course, the bridge game. There were 38 pairs divided into one nine table and one ten table game. The overall winners were Muriel Richens and Jay Magid, Claude Hughes and Paul Levine, Daisy Straus and Carla Van Zuiden, Dariush Youssefi and Raad Bunni.
Unit 498 was well represented at the Santa Clara Presidents Day Regional. All went smoothly and the Marriott was a great venue. Seventy-five of our members and frequent Bayshore players won at the tables. I’ll list those who made off with the most pigmented points and those who received such points two or more times.
The biggest point haul was by Fred Chasalow with 29.61. He was followed by Hamish Bennett, Ted Richmond and Mie Thiemmedh with 26.60, 17.53 and 13.30 respectively.
Four time winners were Fred Chasalow and Maria Ramirez. Three timers were Hamish Bennett, Leila Gaines, Carol Gerlach, Eugene Sor and Mie Thiemmedh. And my favorite class, two timers: Antoni Baranski, David Chan, Pauline Chan, Cameron Cotton, James Dean, Hanan Deeby, Bernard Figueiredo, Rajeev Gupta, Greg House, Robert Ipswitch, Art Quey, Ted Richmond, Bob Robbins, Dee Sauer, Gary Schweitzer, Donald Stone, Elise Stone, Douglas Ulrich, Carla Van Zuiden, Jody Williams, Dariush Youssefi and Xiaodong Zhang.
One less than tw- time winner deserves some extra praise. Sara Rae Miller, who has excelled in hospitality and putting together some fine meals at our unit games, also deserves kudos for her excellence at the bridge tables. She and Gary Schweitzer triumphed over Sara Rae’s long time hero, Max Hardy.
